The only thing Hilary Clinton changes more frequently than her hair style is her position du jour on the Iraq War. The most recent modification of her original decision to vote for the War in Iraq is the latest example of backpedalling by opportunistic electioneering Democratic Politicians.
Of course Hilary isn’t the only prominent Democrat to attempt to explain away her vote to comply with the most recent public opinion polls on Iraq. Every major Democratic Senator did the same, the most notorious of whom was John Kerry. Since all of these malleable democrats appear to be utterly foolish when disavowing their original votes, the standard fallback position for them has become that they were somehow duped by Bush into voting for the War in Iraq.
Here is what Hilary now says about her vote for the War in Iraq: she, "wouldn't have voted that way" if she knew everything she knows now...
This utterly vacuous statement is a little bit like Admiral Kimmel testifying before Congress to the effect that had he known Japanese carrier-based bombers would have attacked Hawaii on the morning of December 7th, 1941, he wouldn’t have left all the ships anchored in Pearl Harbor. (Brilliant Admiral!! This Congressional Hearing is adjourned!)
Of course there is an entirely pragmatic explanation for Hilary’s latest nuanced stance. The left wing of the Democratic Party is swooning over the latest object of their desire: Obama. He is an uber Liberal —even to the left of Hilary. As such, she can’t risk losing that part of the democratic base that dominates the presidential primaries.
Memo to Hilary’s Republican challenger: ridicule is just a few mouse clicks away. Collect video snippets of Hilary’s constantly changing and carefully calibrated posture on the War in Iraq and then post them to the Internet when she attempts to veer back to the Right to burnish her hawkish credentials. Hilary is walking a tightrope on the War in Iraq. The political perils of equivocation may come back to haunt her the same way John Kerry was felled by the perception that he was an opportunistic politician first and a man with convictions second.
