Fred Thompson Works The Campaign Trail in Iowa. But How Hard?

The Politico has an unflattering piece on Fred Thompson working the campaign trail recently in Iowa. Prior to entering the race, rumors abounded about Thompson’s laziness and lackadaisical attitude when it came time to campaigning. There were stories of Thompson getting bored easily and feeling that he would rather be somewhere else than on the campaign trail.
The firsthand account of Roger Simon (who had Mark Halperin of Time magazine tagging along for the ride) following Thompson on a day in a small town in Iowa seems to confirm the characterization of Thompson as someone who is lazy when it comes to campaigning for the presidency. Did Thompson think he was going to mimic Hillary and be crowned by the Republicans as she was being enthroned by the Democrats?
I am of the opinion that Thompson waited much too long to get into the race and when he finally did (Yawn…) he entered the fray with a gigantic Thud. Although no one expects to hear Pericles Funeral Oration at every stump on the politicians schedule, Thompson’s speeches were void of any passion or principles. On many occasions, he had no position whatsoever on issues that for most conservatives were consequential.
To date, I have been unimpressed by Thompson as a presidential candidate. I feel that many people who initially were leaning in his direction are not prepared to give him their vote, if at a minimum, he exhibits no fire or passion for the job.
