Fred Thompson RIP

This should come as no surprise to anyone who hasn’t been in a coma the last six months. Thompson was interested in the presidency only if the electorate bestowed it upon him. His tepid campaign style is all the evidence one needs in support of this proposition. Those political professionals who hitched their wagon to his star look pretty foolish now: he waited far too long to get into the fray, and when he did, his candidacy failed to catch fire (in no small measure due to Fred’s slothful campaign style). He entered with a whimper and he ends with a whimper…there was never any bang.
From numerous firsthand press accounts, it was clear that Fred loathed the hard work and pressing of flesh that a presidential campaign entails. On many occasions, he exhibited no interest in getting off his bus and mixing it up with the crowds. Most people are not going to be enthralled by a candidate who can’t be bothered working for their vote. I think Thompson wanted a coronation without any serious campaigning. Sorry Fred, in this country, presidents are elected not appointed.
