Illegal Immigration and Election 2008: The Issue That Won’t Go Away

The problem of illegal immigration is a smoldering issue that could reappear in force as one of the major political issues that drives the 2008 election.
Leaders of the Democratic Party seem comfortable inverting the natural order of social forces: they are quick to reward those who have broken the law but don’t offer similar benefits to American citizens; they seem comfortable having Mexican politicians dictate American immigration policy; and, in the case of New York Governor, Eliot Spitzer, they seem intent on doling out driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants despite massive opposition to such ludicrous proposals by the voters of New York as well as members of Spitzer’s own party.
Unlike the Democrats, every one of the major Republican contenders has distanced themselves from Bush’s posture and have taken a hard stance on illegal immigration. Most smart contenders have realized that there existed an enormous gap between what the people in the country want in terms of immigration policy (enforcement) and what the political elites tried to ram down the country’s throat with the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill of last summer. How will Hillary justify her vote for the DREAM Act come the general election?
